Do you really need your lights on all the time? This is a question you really need to ask yourself. Chances are you don't. Do you leave your office for 5 minutes and come back an hour later, in the meantime the lights have been burning the whole time. Are there aisles in your warehouse that are only used for 30 minutes a day but remain fully lit for 24 hours? If the answer to either of those questions, or countless others that I don't have room to write here, is yes then you could benefit from installing some lighting controls more advanced than an onoff switch. These come in various different flavours depending on your needs. They can control one light or a bank of lights, they can be sensitive the overall light level in the room this means that if sunlight is streaming through the window then the lights don't need to come on and won't. They can be used to detect the presence or the absence of people. They can dim lights or turn them on and off. What they all have in common is their ability to save you money by stopping you wasting electricity.
These measurements of our light source are very useful when considering what we want our light to highlight most in the room. They help us decide what colors are needed to bring out our accents. Maybe there is a feature that needs to be hidden or displayed in a more creative way and choosing the correct light source can allow you to be more artistic with that color and the space available.
To finish up, think about accent lighting for your kitchen. These are the lights that provide all the soft, non-directional light - and usually determine the 'mood' of your kitchen. You can install accent lights inside cabinets (even better if they are glass), put on some spotlights to highlight a photo or an interesting detail. To add some fizz to your kitchen, consider installing dim lights under the toe-kick. It will make your cabinets seem to float and give off a great accent lighting.
