CFLs (Compact Fluorescent) only use 20-25% of electricity used by incandescents, making them a popular energy efficient choice for homes and businesses. The fluorescent tubing of the lamps can be bent and folded into a variety of shapes. Double turn, triple turn, quadruple turn and spiral shaped bulbs are a standard form but the advent of bulbs such as the Plumen, the world's first designer energy saving light bulb which derives its name from the feathers of a bird and the unit of light, suggests new shapes will continue to appear. For most lamps electronic ballast is contained within the base of the lamp although separate operating ballast may be needed for different voltage operations.
The light emitting diode, or "LED" for short, has largely obliterated the problems usually associated with navigation lighting. Powerful, efficient, compact, highly durable and extremely long lived; incandescent navigation lights never stood a chance once the LED was introduced. Where it was once pretty much standard practice to periodically inspect, clean and replace your lights several times during the boating season, LEDs have made it possible to go an entire season with little more than an occasional inspection to ensure everything is still operating as expected. In most cases, an LED lighting won't even need replacing for 5 years or more.
On the incandescent front, low voltage tungsten halogen lamps remain popular as they produce a brighter, whiter, more efficient light than conventional incandescent bulbs. The halogen lamp's compact lighting source makes objects like glassware, mirrors, and gems sparkle and come alive. Although light from a halogen lamp warms noticeably when dimmed, the lamp life is extended significantly, thereby delaying its inevitable trip to the landfill.
