Solar floodlights are a sure way to show off any home with great architectural features or landscaping. These fixtures make it easy to create a focal point of light for any landscape feature in your yard or garden. Because they are bright, and enhance visibility for up to a hundred feet or more, floodlights also improve the security of the home. Before installing floodlights, check with your homeowner's association rules to see if there are any restrictions or guidelines on the types of lights and wattage that is allowed.
Landscape Lighting, although more expensive, has some definite advantages over solar and rope lighting. It is much brighter than solar or rope lighting and can be placed anywhere (lamps do not have to be exposed to the sun to illuminate.) Landscape lighting lamps are typically made of metal to withstand harsh weather although lamps are also available in more economical plastic. Wattages for landscape lamps can range from two to fifty watt bulbs. Lamp styles come in a variety of shapes and styles including small floodlights, spotlights, two and three tier lamps, bollards, lanterns, coach lights, step lights, deck lights, fence and post lights.
Let's start with LED lighting. It can be extremely effective in the right situation, but there are a couple of things that you need to understand in order to decide whether it's right for you. Firstly, LED lights generally emit a lot less light than the lights that they can replace; to get around this problem the light is concentrated in to a narrow beam. These lights are perfect for highlighting, for shop displays or task lighting. What they generally aren't so good for is lighting large spaces, without careful design you can often end up with bright spots and dark spaces. There are of course exceptions to this, such as some LED tubes (designed to replace fluorescent tubes) which light spaces nicely but these can be relatively expensive. There is also an issue at the moment with reliability, while the life expectancy of LED lights is generally 35,000 to 50,000 hours, as many as 15% fail in early life, even in branded product.
