Pendant kitchen lighting fixtures are decorative fixtures. They typically suspend from the ceiling and offer general as well as task lighting. Most kitchen designers prefer placing them over counter areas or over islands where dining, conversation, baking as well as food preparation occurs. A good example of pendant lighting fixtures is the mini-pendant, which is usually used for small kitchen spaces and is approximately 12 inches or less. Another example is the island light or multi-light pendant, which works well bigger spaces that require more lighting.
When performing lighting design for a room, keep the following facts in mind: Lighting always requires shadow in order to create contrast and visual appeal. Bright overhead lights, while capable of illuminating every aspect of a room, often turn it into a "monotone" and boring space. A given living space typically requires from 5 to 10 light sources in order to be adequately lit. The exact number of light sources will also depend on the color scheme of the room; a darkly painted room will require more lighting than a lightly painted one. Similarly, a heavily decorated room will require more light sources in order to highlight the many interesting features of that space. Matching light collections are ideal for achieving unity in a single room, as well as saving on purchasing time. Pictures and paintings are important features of a room and should be illuminated. Highlighting such items also helps to define the perimeter of a room. To make a room more interesting, try varying the heights of light sources, as well as their intensities (e.g., by installing dimmer switches). Such variations will help create different areas of shade intensity and size.
The proper name for color temperature is The Correlated Color Temperature (CCT). The CCT is described in degrees Kelvin (starting at absolute zero). It is backwards in a way, because when a color of a light source has a high temperature associated with it, it is considered to be a cool color, and if it has a low temperature it is a warm color. Lighting sources with a CCT rating below 3200 K are usually considered "warm", while those with a CCT above 4000 K are usually considered "cool" in appearance. Using a light with a high Correlated Color Temperature will give a greater perception of brightness in the space than lower ones. When calculating a color temperature (CCT) we take the light we are looking at, and compare it to a Blackbody standard base line color model that has radiant power at all wavelengths of light, and where our color falls according to the base model will tell us what our color temperature is. Even at a given Correlated Color Temperature, color can vary. To avoid such variation, the EPA recommends you purchase bulbs from the same manufacturer at the same time. The color temperature rating is listed on the product packaging.
