First let's consider the type of room we are creating and how the lighting design scheme will help us to achieve our vision. As you go through each area of your bathroom consider what you want to get out of it and how choosing the best light fixture will allow you to bring out the best in the room. Let's consider function. Lighting for your bathroom needs to be of such an arrangement as to not only light the space but add personality and character to the ambiance of the room. It needs to be efficient and take as much advantage of any natural light that might be in the room. Your lighting design should allow sufficient light to be able to safely accomplish bathroom duties, but allow you to change the mood from duty lighting to relaxation lighting.
Darkness, the antithesis of light, is an important element in lighting design. Shadows not only help define a space, but through contrast, expand the sense of scale and emphasize the sculptural quality of any object being illuminated. Thoughtfully applied, they can be an effective remedy for awkwardly shaped spaces. Alternatively, should the perimeter of a room be illuminated, the space psychologically appears to be bigger and more relaxing to the occupants.
You don't need to put more than 4-5 switches to an average sized kitchen; however, just think through what you do in your kitchen and what type of light you need for which activity. Then group them together and assign a switch for it. You should also consider using different types of switches: dimmer switches are a good choice over standard switches. Dimmer switches give you far more control over your kitchen lighting. They also help you keep the number of switches down, as you can vary the lights much more this way.
