The high price of LED has been a significant deterrent for many in recent years. However, as the cost of semi-conductor material falls and companies vie for consumers so LED is becoming a more cost-effective option. In conjunction, improved heat sink technology and reliability is giving customers the confidence to view LED as a long term investment. These days a typical lamp life of 20,000-50,000 is the norm and not an unrealistic manufacturer claim. Some lamps, such as the new Philips Xtreme tubes even last up to a staggering 79,000 hours. It is worth also noting that not all LED are dimmable so check before purchasing if this is something you require.
Solar lights come in a variety of styles: two or three tiered lamps, lanterns that hang from an ornamental rod, bollards (small, dome-shaped lights,) tiki torches, fence lights, post lights, small reflector-type flood lights and walk lights with star-patterned down lights. The average cost of a solar light can range from $2.50 to $5.00 depending on the size and whether it is metal or plastic. Most solar lights are LED's today and give a crisp white light that lasts longer than an ordinary incandescent bulb. Solar lights can last for two, three and sometimes four years-the rechargeable battery can easily be replaced when the light grows dim. Solar light provides an attractive accent light that can be used in any area of a yard or garden. Place them where they can be exposed to sunlight all day to get the best and longest illumination at night (usually eight to ten hours.) Solar lights can be purchased singly or in packs of six and ten.
The lighting design concept which advocates creating "pools of light" in a space is especially germane amidst our current focus on energy conservation. By accentuating key areas through a combination of brighter colors and higher illumination levels in a relatively dark space, the eye is drawn only to areas deemed important to the design solution. Another approach, stemming from a more practical standpoint, is to create "layers of light". In this instance, lighting in a space is controlled by separate switches and dimmers so it can be lit either in sections, segregated by task, or in its entirety. This avoids over-lighting and allows for flexible lighting control. Carefully deployed, one can create a sense of drama, ceremony and cadence through these lighting techniques.
