Lighting can take many forms in the garden and can be tailored to suit numerous different types of applications. For example, a water feature that would otherwise be invisible to the eye after dark can be transformed by a single underwater spot light, creating an elegant feature that makes a statement at night. Bollards and floor-mounted lights can lead your way along a path at night as well as provide a warm and inviting look for the garden in the evening. Spot lights can light up tree canopies and artwork in the garden. In the case of statues, display pots and other artwork it is preferable to use a spot light from the left and the right side in order to add depth to the piece - a single spot light in the front or from one side tends to create a comparatively 'flat' or two-dimensional look.
The color of a room's lighting is a major factor in setting the emotional tone for that room. Light is what brings out the colors of the room and gives it the personality that you are trying to design into your space. Light is made up of different colors, and depending on those colors, an object or surface is enhanced or diminished. We see the colors of an object because the light falling on it contains the same colors as the object. The thing to remember when choosing the lighting for a room is what colors are going to be in the room, and will those same colors be present in my lighting design.
There are numerous different styles and heights of solar path lights. If there are many low growing shrubs and flowers that border your garden pathway, fixtures that are one to two feet tall are probably sufficient. When the plants are taller than 2 feet however, you may want to use a longer length light fixture that illuminates the path and the plants. Should your landscape already have pole lights or other light fixtures nearby, consider installing ground level lights, which includes fixture types such as well lights, string lights, stepping stone lights, and solar tile lights.
