Let's start with LED lighting. It can be extremely effective in the right situation, but there are a couple of things that you need to understand in order to decide whether it's right for you. Firstly, LED lights generally emit a lot less light than the lights that they can replace; to get around this problem the light is concentrated in to a narrow beam. These lights are perfect for highlighting, for shop displays or task lighting. What they generally aren't so good for is lighting large spaces, without careful design you can often end up with bright spots and dark spaces. There are of course exceptions to this, such as some LED tubes (designed to replace fluorescent tubes) which light spaces nicely but these can be relatively expensive. There is also an issue at the moment with reliability, while the life expectancy of LED lights is generally 35,000 to 50,000 hours, as many as 15% fail in early life, even in branded product.
Kitchen lighting fixtures also referred to as luminaries, come in a wide variety of styles, colors, shapes, and sizes. This gives the user a wide selection of illumination choices to choose from. Some of the most common types of light fixtures are Ceiling Fixtures. Ceiling fixtures are designed in a way to provide general lighting to the entire kitchen. Typically, they project down from the ceiling and are usually the biggest lighting piece found in the kitchen. These fixtures can also be hung over a breakfast nook or a kitchen table. There are two types of ceiling fixture; flush-mount ceiling fixture with the glass or diffuser touching the ceiling and semi-flush ceiling fixtures where the bowl projecting from the ceiling such that it hangs a couple of inches away, with indirect light reflecting from the ceiling (think of it like an upside down umbrella).
To review a Color Rendering index is a comparison of our light source with an index of the same color temperature. A Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) is described in degrees Kelvin, and it is a comparison of our light source against a standard base line color model that has radiant power at all wavelengths Now we have talked about color temperature and the Color Rendering Index of a light source. In order to get a good picture of what the light source is going to do in our lighting design we need to consider both of them together. For example you can have two or more light sources with the same color temperature and they could be called warm but they render object colors differently. You can have Light sources with the same Color Rendering Index but different Correlated Color Temperatures and they could also render the object color differently. In order to get a more complete picture of how a light source is going to react to a surface you need to use both the Color Rendering Index of the light source and the Color Temperature of the light source together.
