Accent light: Such light is typically four times the intensity of an area's general (ambient) light and focuses attention on a specific object or room fixture. Quite often, halogen lights are used to provide a bright-white glow to an object. In some cases, the accent light can be equipped with a focusing lens in order to target a specific feature of a fixture or object. Display light: This light is typically of low voltage and is used in the display of small keepsakes, figurines, dinnerware, etc. In this case, xenon or halogen lights which range from 3W to 20W are typically used.
Back in the old days, the navigation lights on your boat were little incandescent bulbs housed within a small fixture with colored lenses. Simple and small as they were, somehow they always seemed to have a way of causing problems far out of proportion to their size. Oftentimes it seemed as though the mere act of putting a boat on the water in the dark would cause them to blow out. A few nighttime outings or a single season of use could lead to dead lights, corroded sockets, and fogged up lenses. Worse, most old style navigation lights were hardly what you could call user serviceable. Once a fixture corroded, there was little recourse besides replacing the whole thing if you wanted to get more than a few weeks of use out of it again.
Let's start with LED lighting. It can be extremely effective in the right situation, but there are a couple of things that you need to understand in order to decide whether it's right for you. Firstly, LED lights generally emit a lot less light than the lights that they can replace; to get around this problem the light is concentrated in to a narrow beam. These lights are perfect for highlighting, for shop displays or task lighting. What they generally aren't so good for is lighting large spaces, without careful design you can often end up with bright spots and dark spaces. There are of course exceptions to this, such as some LED tubes (designed to replace fluorescent tubes) which light spaces nicely but these can be relatively expensive. There is also an issue at the moment with reliability, while the life expectancy of LED lights is generally 35,000 to 50,000 hours, as many as 15% fail in early life, even in branded product.
