Back in the old days, the navigation lights on your boat were little incandescent bulbs housed within a small fixture with colored lenses. Simple and small as they were, somehow they always seemed to have a way of causing problems far out of proportion to their size. Oftentimes it seemed as though the mere act of putting a boat on the water in the dark would cause them to blow out. A few nighttime outings or a single season of use could lead to dead lights, corroded sockets, and fogged up lenses. Worse, most old style navigation lights were hardly what you could call user serviceable. Once a fixture corroded, there was little recourse besides replacing the whole thing if you wanted to get more than a few weeks of use out of it again.
Another way to light your house or your landscape is with LED lighting. LED lighting is the newest in lighting technology. LED lights are lights that are composed of tiny little bulbs. Some LED lights are composed of many LED bulbs and can be almost as bright as a regular light. LED lights are very good because they require very little electricity and can even be used together with solar power. For those of you who have a lot of sun, for your landscape lighting, try using solar lights with LED bulbs instead of regular low voltage lighting. You can save on your electric bill and each solar landscape light has its own solar panel. Many of these solar landscape LED lights are designed to generate and store electricity during the day and then when it is dark enough, they turn on and stay on all night.
Sunlight will always be more effective then electric. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use electric light. It can be very helpful when trying to create different light effects inside your house. How to maximize electric light? Think of something more interesting then just one lamp in the center of your ceiling. What about using spotlights to mark out some small special things? Try to create several levels of lighting: one of them can be on the ceiling, then table lights, different kinds of uplighters. Place your light sources in various places of the room - let them emphasize the specifics of your living space. Don't forget to differentiate electric lighting controls - it's not always good to have too much of light.
