The color of a room's lighting is a major factor in setting the emotional tone for that room. Light is what brings out the colors of the room and gives it the personality that you are trying to design into your space. Light is made up of different colors, and depending on those colors, an object or surface is enhanced or diminished. We see the colors of an object because the light falling on it contains the same colors as the object. The thing to remember when choosing the lighting for a room is what colors are going to be in the room, and will those same colors be present in my lighting design.
Accent lighting is used mainly to highlight specific garden areas or objects, picking them out from the rest. You might want to use this type of lighting around a swimming pool or building or to light up aspects or features in your garden (e.g. a particularly attractive shrub or tree). General lighting (sometimes referred to as ambient light) fills in between task and accent lighting and is the sort of lighting you might choose to illuminate paths and work areas in your garden. For some areas you might want to use it in combination with accent lighting, switching between the two depending upon how you are using your garden. Down-lighting & up-lighting will, as the name suggests, cast light downwards or upwards. Wall lights are often used as down-lights to illuminate a flowerbed or a table that's adjacent to a wall. Up-lighting can be used to great effect in the garden under trees or statues to create special effects by profiling particular curves or angles.
The seemingly straightforward task of choosing a light bulb has however become a bit of a mine field in recent years. The plethora of light bulbs and lighting technology on the market and the rapid pace of development in the industry is both cause for consumer celebration and caution. Greater range of choice gives consumers unprecedented freedom but also means it is more important than ever to choose the right light bulb for the right application. Comparing lumens per watt values is an easy way to identify the most "light" efficient lamp in terms of brightness. But to work out which lamp type is best for a specific application in terms of energy efficiency the following things need to be considered: wattage, lamp life, daily use, lamp cost and lighting output required. The best way to do this is with an energy saving calculator. By entering specific values you can compare your current light bulbs with those you are considering replacing them with and make an informed lighting decision based on an energy saving forecast.
