When you start developing your "project plan" for garden lighting, one of the first things you should consider is the type of lighting you will need in your various outdoor spaces. Task lighting is mostly functional. It's the most concentrated type of lighting. You need to install this type in areas where you want to read or carry out any form of detailed work (e.g. needlework and other craft hobbies). You may also want to install task lighting on your deck or in a work space or private area somewhere else in your garden.
LED rope lights are very popular as the strand or 'rope' can fit into tight spaces and easily be concealed, allowing the light to be emitted as a soft glow without seeing the source. This works especially well in water features, swimming pools and under the edges of decking or built-in seating. RGB (Red Green Blue) LED lights allow the colour of the light to be changed remotely at the push of a button, instantly changing the look and feel of the area.
CFLs typically cost as little as £2.00 and they have a lamp life of 6,000-20,000 hours. This makes them ideal for applications used for a few hours daily and especially for those looking for instant energy savings at low initial outlay. In the past concerns have been raised regarding slow warm up times and flickering but if a good quality CFL is brought today this should not be an issue.
