Where LED lights really shine though is in light output and electrical efficiency. A typical incandescent bulb produces about 17 light lumens per watt at best. Most of the electrical energy fed to the bulb is radiated as heat, resulting in a very inefficient and wasteful light source. LEDs, on the other hand, produce anywhere from 60 to 100 lumens per watt. Very little energy fed into the LED is radiated as heat, resulting in a very efficient light source that can produce a lot more light than an incandescent while using far less electrical power. Considering the importance of navigation lighting and the need to conserve power on a boat, this is an extremely attractive benefit. You can use less power, yet produce a much stronger nav light signal, improving your visibility to other boats while reducing power consumption at the same time. On smaller boats, you could run a basic set of navigation lights all night and still not deplete your batteries. Increased safety and increased efficiency, all from a simply change in light sources!
Task lighting is brighter lights positioned in areas where specific tasks will be undertaken that require clear vision. This could be in the form of a reading lamp, or spotlighting above kitchen worktops. Also providing additional light to a specific area is accent lighting. These are lights that highlight a particular feature in the room, such as a painting on the wall and making it a focal point. Accent lighting can help to distract the eye away from less desirable areas in the space too!
It may be easier to think of colored LEDs (RGB) and white LEDs in terms of another industry: Automotive. RGB LEDs are like the internal combustion engine: Reliable, abundant, easy to use and manufacture, and fairly well developed in terms of the potential for new or breakthrough technologies. There are lots on manufacturers and each has their own set of patents and "tricks of the trade" to help give themselves some marketing leverage over the competition. White LEDs are like the alternative energy industry for transportation: Quite varied, still relatively "new", still needing to be market proven, more expensive, more challenging to manage. There are many manufacturers, each using a different technology or combination of technologies to achieve what they believe is the "the next big thing." Following this analogy, RGB LEDs are mature enough to compete on cost alone and the drop in costs is what fuels new applications for colored LEDs that had not been thought of previously. White LEDs, on the other hand are still developing technically and should not be shopped based on cost alone. The need for quality and longevity is what fuels the further research and development into white LEDs.
