The sink and vanity - Because this area is also an area of task oriented personal hygiene you should also have specific task lighting to light it. Lighting here doesn't need to be dull and boring. Here is where you are making yourself look presentable to the world and you need the atmosphere around you to complement the tasks you are working on. Pendant lights, chandeliers, spotlights, recessed lighting, track lighting, or wall mounted fixtures like sconces, can add style and excitement to this purely functional area of the bathroom. This area could flow into the commode area or it can have its own ambiance and atmosphere that is completely its own. In designing this area remember this is the last place you will probably visit at night before you go to bed so it needs to be able to start relaxing you. This area of the bathroom is also the first place you will visit when you get up in the morning, so it needs to be able to wake us up and invigorate us for the day. It is where we make ourselves presentable to the rest of the world and under poor lighting conditions it is hard to do.
Switching to LED lights is easy too. With less effort than it takes to remove, clean and repair a standard incandescent nav light, you can install an LED unit in its place. Companies like Magnalight offer LED navigation lights that require little more than screwing the unit into place and hooking up the wires to finish an installation. With a couple hours of effort, you can switch out all your navigation lights with LED units and reap several years' worth of almost maintenance free operation. It's no wonder then that LEDs are quickly making the incandescent navigation lights a thing of the past.
Fluorescent lighting has been around a long time and you may not think it is that efficient. Old fluorescent lighting certainly isn't T12 and T8 tubes and their drivers can be horribly wasteful, sometimes using double the amount of power they are rated at. However T5 fluorescent tubes coupled with a modern ballast is remarkably efficient, almost as efficient in fact as LED lighting. Modern warm start ballasts have also increased reliability and allowed for extending the life of the tubes which can now reach as much as 30,000 or 40,000 hours. Modern drivers also operate at high frequency, unlike their older counterparts, which mean there is no longer a noticeable flicker with fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lights do also suffer from early failures, and because they rely on a filament the more often they are turned on and off the shorter their life will be; this means turning them on and of with presence detection to reduce their use and save money on your bill could backfire when you have to frequently replace the tubes. If you do go down this route make sure the drivers feature warm start and don't set the controls to frequently turn the lights on and off.
